Dalkia: Reliable waste management for a regulated nuclear site

The Challenge

As a facilities management provider operating within the nuclear sector, Dalkia manages complex waste streams under strict environmental and safety regulations. Their client, EDF, requires complete transparency and compliance in waste handling — from documentation and disposal routes to on-site coordination.

Before partnering with Hamilton Waste, Dalkia struggled with unreliable collections, inconsistent communication, and delays in receiving key compliance paperwork such as waste transfer notes and weighbridge tickets. With a compact waste compound and stringent booking procedures on site, these issues created operational pressures and risks to compliance.

The Solution

Hamilton Waste was appointed to manage Dalkia’s conventional and select special waste services at the site, following a tender focused on reliability, communication, and compliance assurance.

The partnership began with a one-year trial contract but quickly grew into a long-term collaboration spanning over seven years. Today, Hamilton Waste provides a full range of container sizes — from 8-yard skips through to 40-yard roll-offs — covering mixed recyclables, metal, wood, paper, marine and site-generated waste streams.

Close communication between Dalkia’s site team and Hamilton Waste’s Account Manager, ensures collections are precisely scheduled and managed around security and regulatory protocols. If delays occur, Hamilton proactively updates Dalkia to allow rescheduling and coordination with site security — maintaining full visibility and trust.

The Results

The partnership has delivered a consistently high level of service, underpinned by trust, transparency, and compliance excellence. Dalkia benefits from:

  • Prompt and accurate documentation — including immediate return of weighbridge tickets and transfer notes for SEPA audits.
  • Responsive, flexible support — including rapid mobilisation of additional skips during peak waste generation periods, such as marine ingress clean-ups.
  • Proactive communication — Hamilton keeps Dalkia updated on new waste regulations and shares best practice guidance, supporting ongoing compliance.
  • Collaborative Partnership — to ensure continuous improvement, when required Hamilton’s Health & Safety Manager attends site to assist with investigations and provide consultation services.

After seven years, Dalkia continues to value Hamilton Waste as a trusted partner — one that delivers on promises, maintains open communication, and supports their mission to reduce waste across their operations.
